A Weekend in Oklahoma City

I recently spent a weekend in Oklahoma City and was pleasantly surprised by the people and its hip and happening culture. If you are driving through the city or have time for a quick weekend getaway I would go see/do the following:

  • Centennial Land Run Monument
  • Walk the canal in Bricktown (riverwalk)
  • Visit the coffee shops
  • Walk the streets of Bricktown and explore

Centennial Land Run Monument

There is a pathway from the canal (below) that leads to this monument or start here and walk to the canal. The monument is pretty impressive and even represents the horses passing through the river on their way to find land.

Where: Located at Bricktown Canal near Bass Pro Shops

Bricktown Canal

For those who have been to the San Antonio Riverwalk this is very similar but smaller. Located in the area of Bricktown, the canal offers a place to walk along the river as you pass riverside restaurants and other venues. There are activities for kids such as mini golf and of course tons of places to eat along the way. Park your car and go for a stroll or take a water taxi along the canal.

Coffee Shops

Oklahoma City seems to have these neat little coffee shops that serves good coffee.

Leaf + Bean

This is more of a modern coffee shop. This coffee shop knows how to make a proper latte or cappuccino. Grab your coffee, stay for a bit and then walk the streets of this quiet area.

Hank’s Coffee & Wine

This coffee shop is more of a cozy place to sit down with your cup of coffee and enjoy the vintage comfy seating. They also have a small patio available for those who enjoy the outdoors.

Explore

If you do visit, there are tons of places to eat in Bricktown, there is a great baseball stadium and a botanical gardens. Park your car for the day and go and explore.

Tip: Don’t be afraid of the food trucks, the BBQ I had was astonishing!

How to get here?

Well that’s really up to you. We rented a car from Hertz and drove up. If you are driving, it is easy to get in and out of the city via I-35/235. You can also fly into Oklahoma City Airport (OKC).
