Introduction
When planning my stay near Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica, I wanted a hotel that balanced relaxation, convenience, and family-friendly space. After researching options in La Fortuna, I chose Volcano Lodge Hotel & Thermal Experience for a few key reasons.
First, the property features on-site thermal hot springs, which meant we could skip planning an extra excursion or hiking to another location. After long days of exploring, being able to walk straight into a hot spring was exactly what we were looking for.
Second, the hotel is relatively close to the major activities around Arenal, making it a perfect home base. Add in included breakfast and a resort that looked spacious, lush, and ideal for families, and it checked every box.
In the end, it turned out to be exactly what I needed, a relaxing, convenient, and enjoyable place to stay.
Location & Setting
Volcano Lodge Hotel & Thermal Experience is located about 10 minutes (6 km / 4 miles) from downtown La Fortuna, making it easy to access restaurants, tours, and shops while still feeling tucked away.
The property is surrounded by lush tropical landscaping, with dense flora that attracts a wide variety of birds. You’ll regularly hear birds throughout the day and spot them around the grounds, adding to the rainforest experience.
Getting there was simple and straightforward, and from the moment we arrived, the staff were welcoming and helpful, setting a great tone for the stay.
Check-In Experience
The check-in process was smooth, efficient, and well organized. Our room was ready as expected, allowing us to settle in right away.
The hotel uses a wristband system, where adults receive a band that allows them to charge food and drinks to the room, while others are given a different band. It’s a simple but effective system that makes things easy around the property.
The staff were friendly, clear, and concise, providing helpful details about the thermal pools, restaurant, and amenities. They also offered assistance with booking excursions, which is a great option if you prefer convenience.
The Rooms
Room Type & Comfort
I booked a Superior Room with two double beds, which was comfortable and functional for our stay. The beds were comfortable, and while the room itself was fairly basic, it had everything we needed.
The bathroom featured a large shower, and the private patio overlooked a green space filled with wildlife. It was a great place to relax and watch birds throughout the day.
The room was clean overall, though slightly dim in lighting.
One major convenience: parking is located directly outside each unit, making it easy to access your vehicle at any time.
Amenities
The resort offers free WiFi throughout the property, but this was one of the weaker aspects of the stay. Each area has its own network (SSID), which makes reconnecting a bit inconvenient.
In our room, the WiFi was very poor, and cellular service was also limited. However, there is a wired internet connection, and once plugged in, the speed was extremely fast.
Other amenities included:
- A mini fridge that stayed very cold
- Coffee maker
- In-room safe
- Large storage and hanging space
- A nearby ice machine that worked extremely well
Overall, aside from the WiFi challenges, the amenities were solid.
Thermal Pools (Hot Springs Experience)
One of the biggest reasons we chose Volcano Lodge Hotel & Thermal Experience was for the on-site thermal hot springs, and they absolutely delivered.
Having the hot springs on-site meant we didn’t need to plan another excursion or hike to a separate location, which made the experience much more relaxing and convenient.
Each thermal pool area includes three levels with different temperatures, allowing you to move between warm and hot pools depending on your preference.
The atmosphere was calm, peaceful, and not crowded during our stay. I never had trouble finding space, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
The thermal pool I used most often had a great view overlooking the main pool and restaurant, offering a perfect mix of scenery and convenience.
Overall, the thermal pools were a major highlight and one of the best parts of the stay and it was great to move between the thermal and regular pools.
Property Grounds & Atmosphere
The grounds are beautifully maintained and full of lush greenery, creating a relaxing tropical environment.
There is a noticeable amount of wildlife, especially birds, which you can see and hear throughout the day. The hotel even has a small walking trail that takes you through the property’s gardens.
While you won’t have direct views of Arenal Volcano, the surrounding trees create a secluded, eco-lodge atmosphere that’s perfect for unwinding.
There are a couple of pools to choose from. We spent our time at the pool near the restaurant. The pool was nice and spacious but sections of the bottom did require re-finishing.
A unique amenity was the children’s playground. It was perfect for the young kids to go play while finishing a meal. The resort also had a table tennis table to enjoy.
Dining & Food
We had breakfast, lunch, and dinner on-site, and overall the food exceeded expectations.
Breakfast
Breakfast is buffet-style with a mix of American and Costa Rican options. Highlights included:
- Omelet station
- Fresh fruit and juices
- A wide variety of hot and cold options
It was a great way to start the day before heading out for activities.
Lunch
We had lunch poolside, ordering a burger and chicken strips. Even the kids meal was massive, and the burger was very flavorful and cooked perfectly (highly recommended).
Dinner
Dinner offered a variety of options, including pasta and traditional Costa Rican dishes. Prices ranged from 10,000–20,000 CRC, which felt very reasonable for a resort. We had the Cordon Blue in Mushroom Sauce, Rice with Chicken and various pasta dishes which were great.
The quality and flavor were consistently excellent.
What I Loved Most
- The resort felt secluded and private, both in the room layout and overall design
- The central area (restaurant, pool, thermal springs, playground) is all visible in one place—great for families
- The wildlife and bird activity added a unique and memorable experience
Tips for Future Guests
- Request rooms away from the entrance/top of the property to reduce traffic
- Check in early to maximize time at the thermal pools
- Take time to walk the trails around the property

For us, this resort delivered exactly what we wanted: comfort, convenience, and relaxation without overcomplicating the trip. The on-site thermal springs alone make it a standout choice.
I would definitely stay here again, especially for anyone wanting a mix of nature, relaxation, and easy access to activities in La Fortuna.
