Looking for an honest JW Marriott Guanacaste review? I spent a week at the JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort & Spa in Costa Rica, and while there is a lot to love about this beautiful beachfront property, it isn’t perfect. From its spectacular infinity pool and secluded beach to its excellent service and family-friendly activities, this is a resort designed for travelers who want to relax and enjoy the property.
Located about 30 minutes south of Tamarindo, the JW Marriott Guanacaste is secluded, peaceful, and beautifully developed. It’s particularly appealing if you want a resort vacation where you can spend most of your time by the pool or beach without needing to leave.
There were also some disappointments, including a few minor room-maintenance issues and higher-end restaurants that didn’t quite live up to expectations.
So, is the JW Marriott Guanacaste worth staying at? After a week at the resort, here’s my complete review.

Where Is the JW Marriott Guanacaste?
The JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort & Spa is located in Guanacaste on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, about 30 minutes south of Tamarindo.
Its location is one of the property’s biggest advantages — and potentially one of its biggest disadvantages.
The resort is tucked away inside a private, secluded enclave, far enough from the hustle and bustle of Tamarindo that it feels like you’ve escaped somewhere entirely different.
The grounds are beautifully landscaped and well maintained, and the resort has a peaceful atmosphere that makes it easy to disconnect.
However, that privacy comes with a trade-off.
If you want to regularly visit Tamarindo, go shopping, explore restaurants, or experience the area’s nightlife, you’ll have to make the roughly 30-minute drive each way.
Getting to the JW Marriott Guanacaste
If you’re driving, be prepared for the final stretch.
Costa Rica’s roads aren’t exactly famous for being smooth, and the dirt road leading into the private enclave was particularly rough during my trip. In fact, it was some of the worst road conditions I encountered during my week-long drive from San José to Guanacaste.
Once you reach the resort, however, things become much easier. Parking is convenient, and free self-parking is available, which is a nice benefit if you’re renting a car.

The Beach at JW Marriott Guanacaste
If you’re looking for a Costa Rica resort with a beautiful beach, the JW Marriott Guanacaste delivers.
The resort sits alongside a long stretch of sandy Pacific coastline that feels remarkably private. Because there isn’t extensive development immediately surrounding the property, you don’t get the crowds and commercial activity that you might find at some other Costa Rican beach destinations.
The beach is perfect for walking, relaxing, watching the waves, or simply finding a quiet spot away from the pool.
One of my favorite things about the beach was the sense of space. You can walk along the sand and enjoy the scenery without feeling like you’re surrounded by other hotels, restaurants, and tourists.
And then there are the sunsets.
The Pacific sunsets here are spectacular. As the sun begins to disappear over the horizon, the beach becomes one of the best places on the property to sit back and take it all in.
For me, the combination of the secluded beach, Pacific Ocean views, and incredible sunsets was one of the highlights of the entire stay.
JW Marriott Guanacaste Check-In Experience
Check-in was smooth, efficient, and professional.
I had booked three rooms, and all three were ready when I arrived. After traveling through Costa Rica, it was nice to arrive at the resort and have everything ready without having to wait around.
As a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum member, my status was acknowledged, and I was offered the applicable welcome options. I chose breakfast, which turned out to be an excellent choice.
The resort also provides elegant wristbands that guests wear throughout their stay. They’re a simple touch but make it easy for staff to identify resort guests around the property.
Overall, the arrival experience was excellent.

JW Marriott Guanacaste Rooms
The rooms at the JW Marriott Guanacaste are spacious, comfortable, and well laid out.
All three of my rooms overlooked the pool and had sitting balconies. Having a balcony with a pool view was particularly enjoyable in the mornings and evenings.
When I arrived in my room, there was a fruit basket and cold bottled water waiting, which was a nice welcome after a long day of travel.
The rooms I booked had:
- Two queen beds
- Sitting balcony
- Office desk
- Small armchair
- Mini refrigerator
- Coffee maker
- In-room safe
- Spacious bathroom
- Separate bathtub and shower
The room was clean, cool, comfortable, and had plenty of space.

Are the JW Marriott Guanacaste Rooms Five-Star?
This is where I think expectations are important.
The rooms were very good, but I wouldn’t describe my experience as flawless five-star luxury.
I encountered a couple of small maintenance problems. The toilet handle would occasionally get stuck, and the bathtub stopper wasn’t working properly.
Neither issue was serious enough to ruin my stay. However, these are exactly the types of small details that, in my opinion, separate a very good four-star experience from a true five-star hotel experience.
For a property carrying the JW Marriott name, I would expect those minor issues to be addressed before guests arrive.
JW Marriott Guanacaste Pool
The infinity pool is arguably the best feature of the JW Marriott Guanacaste.
It’s enormous, beautifully maintained, and stretches toward the beach, creating the impression that the pool flows directly into the Pacific Ocean.
The pool was immaculate during my stay and offered incredible views throughout the day.
But sunset was when it really came alive.
Sitting in the infinity pool while watching the sun set over the Pacific was one of those moments that made the trip memorable.

JW Marriott Guanacaste Pool Tip
Get your lounge chair early.
If you plan to spend the day at the pool, don’t wait until late morning to look for a chair. The best spots can fill up quickly, and some areas have limited shade.
If you’re not there early, you could end up spending much of the afternoon sitting in direct Costa Rican sunshine.
The pool staff were also some of the best employees I encountered during the trip.
One person who particularly stood out was Luis Diego. He was friendly, polite, attentive, and worked extremely hard throughout the week. His service made our pool experience noticeably better.
It was also easy to order food and drinks from the pool area, making it possible to spend most of the day without needing to leave your chair.
JW Marriott Guanacaste Amenities and Activities
There’s plenty to do at the resort, which is important given its secluded location.
Wi-Fi was available throughout the property, and the coverage was excellent during my stay.
The resort also offers a wide range of daily activities. Depending on the day, guests can participate in activities such as:
- Beach marshmallow roasting
- Bike rides
- Aqua aerobics
- Latin dancing
- Coffee classes
- Mixology classes
- Cooking classes
The activity schedule is especially appealing to families. Kids have plenty to keep them occupied, while adults can choose from activities that are a little more relaxing or educational.
There is also a playground for children, several hot tubs, and plenty of open space throughout the resort.
The staff were consistently friendly and helpful, which made the activities feel welcoming rather than overly structured.

JW Marriott Guanacaste Restaurants and Food
Dining was probably the most inconsistent part of my stay.
The service at the restaurants was consistently excellent, but I found the quality of the food at some of the resort’s higher-end restaurants to be only average.
Here’s how my dining experiences compared.
Sabanero Steak House Review
Unfortunately, Sabanero Steak House was the biggest disappointment.
The restaurant positions itself as a higher-end steakhouse, and based on the menu and pricing, I expected a much better meal.
The steaks we ordered were disappointing, particularly considering the price. The quality didn’t match what I expected from a premium steakhouse at a JW Marriott resort.
The drinks also missed the mark. I ordered an Old Fashioned, and it arrived with crushed ice, which wasn’t what I expected.
The service was excellent, but unfortunately, great service couldn’t make up for the disappointing food and drinks.
Would I eat at Sabanero again? No.
That’s probably the restaurant I would skip on a return visit.
Pimento Italian Review
Pimento Italian was a much better experience.
The restaurant serves pizzas and pastas, making it a particularly good choice for families with children.
The food was good, the atmosphere was pleasant, and the service was excellent.
It wasn’t the most memorable Italian meal I’ve ever had, but it was a reliable and enjoyable resort dining option.
Sandbar Lounge Review
The Sandbar Lounge was one of my favorite dining options for something quick and casual.
The menu offered a wide variety of choices, including plenty of options for both adults and kids.
Sometimes you don’t want to sit through a long formal dinner — especially when you’re on vacation and have spent the entire day at the pool.
The Sandbar was convenient, casual, and easy, and I appreciated having that option available.
JW Marriott Guanacaste Breakfast
Breakfast was one of the highlights of my stay.
Because of my Marriott Bonvoy Platinum status, I selected breakfast as my welcome benefit.
Breakfast was served buffet-style at Tamarine and offered a huge variety of choices.
The buffet included:
- Made-to-order omelets
- Yogurt
- Fresh-cut fruit
- Cereals
- Bacon
- Eggs
- Fresh juices
- Coffee
- Lattes and other coffee drinks
- Traditional Costa Rican dishes
Tamarine’s upper-level location also provides a great view overlooking the pool.
But what impressed me most wasn’t necessarily the food — it was the service.
After just two days, the staff already knew what coffee we wanted in the morning.
That small detail made breakfast feel much more personalized and became part of our daily routine.
Sit down, order our coffee, enjoy the buffet, look out over the pool, and start the day.
Is the JW Marriott Guanacaste Family Friendly?
Yes.
I would consider the JW Marriott Guanacaste a very family-friendly resort.
The large pool, beach, playground, and daily activities provide plenty for children to do. The resort also offers kid-friendly food options, particularly at places such as Pimento Italian and the Sandbar Lounge.
The beach marshmallow roasting was a particularly fun activity for kids.
At the same time, the resort doesn’t feel like it is exclusively designed for families. Couples and adults without children can still find plenty of quiet areas and enjoy the beach, pool, sunsets, and resort amenities.

What I Loved Most About the JW Marriott Guanacaste
After a week at the property, these were the things that stood out most to me:
1. The Infinity Pool
The massive infinity pool is spectacular and perfectly positioned overlooking the beach.
2. The Beach
The long, secluded beach provides plenty of space to walk, relax, and watch the sunset.
3. The Secluded Setting
The resort feels removed from the crowds, making it an excellent place to unwind.
4. The Service
The staff consistently provided friendly and professional service throughout the property.
5. The Activities
There was always something happening, and many of the activities were family-friendly.

Tips for Staying at the JW Marriott Guanacaste
Get to the Pool Early
This is my biggest practical tip. If you want a prime lounge chair, get there early.
Don’t Underestimate the Seclusion
Tamarindo is about 30 minutes away. If you’re planning to explore restaurants and attractions outside the resort frequently, factor that drive into your plans.
Be Prepared for the Road
The final dirt road leading into the resort can be extremely bumpy. If you’re driving a rental car, take it slowly.
Consider Choosing Breakfast
If you have Marriott Bonvoy elite benefits that allow you to choose breakfast, I thought it was a worthwhile option.
Plan on Spending Time at the Resort
The JW Marriott Guanacaste is best experienced as a resort vacation. The beach, pool, activities, restaurants, and grounds give you plenty of reasons to stay on property.
JW Marriott Guanacaste Pros and Cons

Final Verdict: Is JW Marriott Guanacaste Worth It?
For a relaxing Costa Rica beach vacation, yes.
The JW Marriott Guanacaste is a beautiful resort with three major things going for it: the infinity pool, the beach, and the service.
The massive pool overlooking the Pacific is spectacular. The beach is long, beautiful, and secluded. And throughout my stay, the staff were friendly, professional, and genuinely helpful.
The resort also does a great job catering to families, with activities ranging from bike rides and aqua aerobics to cooking classes and beach marshmallow roasting.
It’s not perfect.
The higher-end restaurants didn’t consistently meet my expectations, and the small maintenance problems in the room were disappointing for a property positioning itself as a luxury five-star resort.
But if your idea of the perfect Costa Rican vacation is checking into a beautiful resort, spending your days around an infinity pool, walking a nearly private beach, watching spectacular sunsets, and enjoying a peaceful setting, the JW Marriott Guanacaste is a very good choice.
If, on the other hand, you want to be close to restaurants, nightlife, and attractions in Tamarindo, the resort’s secluded location could become a drawback.
My Take
The JW Marriott Guanacaste is best for travelers who want to stay put and enjoy the resort.
It’s peaceful, beautiful, family-friendly, and exceptionally well situated for enjoying Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. While it doesn’t quite deliver a flawless five-star experience in every detail, the overall experience was excellent.
Would I stay here again? Yes — particularly if I wanted a relaxing beach-focused vacation where the resort itself was the destination.
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
